Perception Robotics’ novel tactile sensing solution is based on a flexible rubber sensor that can be molded to a wide variety of shapes and its mechanical, thermal and electrical properties can be tailored to a variety of applications. The substance acts like a rubber strain gauge – its resistance changes with the strain placed on its surface.  Tomographic software techniques are used to generate a pressure profile of the internal rubber using a peripheral arrangement of high conductivity rubber “electrodes”.

The solution addresses the limitations with existing robotics (pick) handling, which often have difficulty dealing with shiny or fragile objects and utilize expensive and complex 3D machine vision systems.
